I Buy and Sell Antique Golf Clubs and Memorabilia
Travel back in time to the dawning of the 20th century to a simpler time, where hand-crafted hickory shaft golf clubs were one-of-a-kind. And golf greats like Harry Vardon, Ted Ray, Bobby Jones, Gene Sarazen, Walter Hagen, and others tested themselves with wooden shafts and unforgiving club heads.
Iron were forged, hammered, and made ready for hickory shafts to be tapered and inserted, glued, pinned to keep the heads tight, and sanded and shaped. Finally the shafts were lacquered for protection, and grips hand-wrapped with leather strips. Once in play, the caddies rubbed emery cloth on the center of the irons to remove rust, highlighting the area of the intended strike.
To the player who is in the throes of incapacity with a certain club, a new implement is ethereal; it holds out unbounded promise….in times of blackest despair, he sees salvation through an avenue of shafts and heads.
(Harry Vardon – 1912 winner of 6 Open Championships)
